Frequently Asked Questions
Who Are We?
We are a small, passionate collective of historians and craftspeople.
Driven by a love for ancient techniques and authentic materials, we handcraft each piece to bridge the gap between past and present. We're not a factory; we're a workshop where every stitch is placed with intention. When you buy from us, you're not just getting a piece of clothing, you're supporting a living craft and receiving a piece of wearable history made with care.
What is na'albinding (or nalbinding)?
Na'albinding is an ancient fabric creation technique predating knitting and crochet. Using a single, large needle, we create loops that are interlocked in a specific stitch pattern (like the Oslo stitch). This method produces an incredibly durable, stretchy, and warm fabric that doesn't unravel. It was used across the medieval world, making it the most authentic technique for a hat from this period.
Why is na'albinding better than knitting for a medieval hat?
Authenticity is the primary reason. Na'albinding is historically accurate for the Viking and early medieval periods. Practically, na'albound fabric is denser, more wind-resistant, and far more durable than knitted fabric. A small snag will not cause the entire hat to unravel.
Sizing & Fit- Hats
What size is the hat? It says 26" circumference.
The 26-inch circumference is designed to be generously sized for an average adult head (which is typically 22-24 inches). The natural elasticity of the technique allows the hat to stretch and contract for a snug, custom fit. You can wear it as a close-fitting cap or cuff the brim for a tighter fit around the ears.
Do you make custom sizes?
Yes! We want your hat to be perfect. Please contact us before ordering to discuss custom sizing for adults, children, or particularly large/small head circumferences.
How do I care for my medieval clothing?
Hand wash only! Gently wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not agitate or wring the item. Rinse thoroughly and press the water out by rolling it in a towel. Then, lay it flat to dry away from direct heat or sunlight. This will prevent felting and preserve the item's shape and quality for decades.
How long will it take to receive my custom item?
Please note that each item is made-to-order using a time-intensive, historical process. Our current production time is approximately 4-6 weeks before shipment. You will receive a notification as soon as your order is on its way. We appreciate your patience, as it allows us to maintain the highest level of craftsmanship.
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
Due to the custom, handmade nature of our products, we generally do not accept returns or exchanges. However, we stand by our quality. If there is a defect in materials or workmanship, please contact us immediately so we can make it right. We want you to be thrilled with your piece of history.
How accurate is this item for reenactment/LARP/SCA?
Our hats are meticulously researched reproductions based on archaeological finds and contemporary sources. The materials, technique, and design are all chosen to meet the standards of serious living history. They are perfect for reenactment, LARP, SCA garb, or history enthusiasts of all sorts.
Can you make an item from specific archaeological finds?
We love a challenge! If you have a reference from a specific museum or find (like the Coppergate hood, a sock from Egypt, etc.), please contact us to discuss a custom commission. Please note that this may affect the price and production time.
